About the event

Russia is fighting in Syria and in Eastern Ukraine, but can hardly sustain economic growth and social welfare at home. Hydrocarbons exports and arms sales bring substantial revenues, but the investment climate remains unattractive. Vladimir Putin is facing the disenchantment of many among the elites and middle class. What are his options, domestically and in foreign affairs? Is the confrontation with Europe, the USA and Canada bound to last? Will Moscow build on closer partnerships with its Asian neighbours.

About the speakers

Dr. Marie  MENDRAS is a political scientist in the field of Russian and post-Soviet studies at the CNRS and CERI in Paris, and a professor at Sciences Po University’s Paris School of International Affairs. She is the author of Russian Politics. The Paradox of a Weak State (NY: Oxford University Press, 2014), and publishes on Russia-Europe relations. This year, she is a Kennan Expert at the Woodrow Wilson Center, Washington D.C.

Marie Mendras is on the editorial board of Esprit, a humanities journal, and Books, a monthly magazine dedicated to foreign books. She is on the academic scholarships board of the Zeit-Stiftung Ebelin und Gert Bucerius in Hamburg.
