In 1998, Barry Nalebuff and Seth Goldman started Honest Tea. They couldn’t find something they wanted to drink, so they founded a company to make bottled iced tea that actually tastes like tea. Given all the beverages out there, you might think this would be a recipe for disaster. You’ve got a professor and his former student, neither of whom had ever done anything like this. If it was such a good idea, why hadn’t someone – someone who might actually know what they were doing – already done it? And yet, Seth and Barry grew the business from five thermoses to more than a billion bottles sold. What they lacked in experience they made up for with passion and strategy guided by economic theory. We'll talk about how to find the right hole in the market, how to be a lean start up, the lessons learned, and most importantly, how to create a successful business without sacrificing your ideals.
